Christmas Service Visit of Maureen Wise (Moldova)
Having Fun Art & Craft Activities
The Salem Stars Group
The church works with a group of service users from the nearby day centre for adults with learning difficulties. Meetings are generally held fortnightly on a Wednesday morning from 10.30am to 12.00am. Activities include:
Bible Studies: Sessions are interactive and include worksheets, word searches, quizzes and craft activities. Over the past year we have talked about ‘What is God like?’, ‘Why is the world like it is?’, ‘Why did Jesus come?’ This session we will be looking at the life of Joseph from Genesis.
Charity work: Each year we fill Christmas shoe boxes for Blythswood Care. They are sent to needy adults and children in Romania and Moldova. To date we have filled more than 300 shoe boxes. The work starts as early as July, when shoe boxes are collected and covered with Christmas paper. The group holds a coffee morning to raise funds to purchase items to fill the boxes. Donations are always welcome.
The group also makes and sells greeting cards for the work of the Bethesda Fellowship of churches in Haiti as it supports children orphaned by the earthquake of 2010.
Links: The group has formed a link with Casa Bucuriei, a home for disadvantaged ladies in Moldova. Letters, greeting cards and gifts are exchanged. Last year the group were visited by Maureen and Galina from Moldova.
Sharing: A most valuable part of the sessions is the opportunity to talk and pray together, and share each others joys and sorrows.
Fun: Sessions are always happy occasions. There is always much laughter and tea and cakes.
